VILNIUS - Lithuania’s parliament foreign affairs committee has backed a proposal from the foreign ministry to open an embassy in Brazil.

"The committee decided to approve the Foreign Ministry's proposal to open an embassy in Brazil. This would serve as a bridge to Latin America," Committee Chairman Remigijus Motuzas told on Wednesday.

Motuzas said such a strategic investment is necessary as South America is currently not covered in terms of diplomatic representation.

The committee chairman said the move is not a political decision but is focused on the economic dimension, citing Brazil's large market and the goal of diversifying trade routes.

It is not yet clear when the embassy could begin operations.

Following the committee's approval, a formal request will be made to Brazil. Once consent is granted, a government decree will be adopted.

Lithuania currently operates a consulate general in Sao Paulo. According to Motuzas, the consulate is expected to continue its activities but with a smaller staff. The Foreign Ministry's website indicates that the consulate general currently employs four people.

Brazil is a member of the BRICS group, which also includes Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE and Indonesia. Asked about potential risks, Motuzas said diplomatic representation does not equate to the development of political alliances.
