VILNIUS - Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda called for national unity on Monday as the country marked Statehood Day and National Anthem Day, saying it was needed to protect democracy and strengthen Lithuania's resilience.
During a flag-raising ceremony at Simonas Daukantas Square, the president said a complex geopolitical environment encouraged Lithuania to consolidate its forces, strengthen national resilience and cooperate with allies.
According to the head of state, July 6 was a "wonderful opportunity" to celebrate the Lithuanian state and remember the "lessons of a rich history and the achievements of the present."
He stressed that Lithuania would remain strong as long as it preserved its unity.
Statehood Day, marking the 773rd anniversary of the coronation of King Mindaugas, was observed in Lithuania on Monday. According to the president, Mindaugas was the first to recognise the need to unify the Lithuanian state, which gained international recognition and became part of the family of European nations.
Nauseda said Lithuania had not forgotten these historical lessons, as it strengthens state resilience, mobilises allies and provides aid to Ukraine.
July 6 marks the coronation of Mindaugas as King of Lithuania in 1253. Statehood Day was declared an official holiday in 1990 after the restoration of Lithuania's independence.
