We must continue strong support for Ukraine - Mierina

RIGA - Strong support for Ukraine must continue, Saeima Speaker Daiga Mierina (Greens/Farmers) stressed during a meeting with the Greek Ambassador to Latvia, Evangelos Tournakis.

As LETA was told at the Saeima press service, both the speaker and the ambassador agreed that support for Ukraine must not disappear from the agenda, despite the turbulence in the Middle East.

Mierina underlined that sanctions should be targeted at sectors that generate income for Russia, which it uses to continue the war. The current events in the Middle East will affect oil prices, and Russia must not be allowed to take advantage of this, Mierina said.

Discussing the impact of global turmoil on Europe, Mierina noted the importance of strengthening the resilience of EU member states to crises. The Greek ambassador stressed the need to strengthen the military capabilities of European countries.

The Saeima speaker and the ambassador also discussed ways of strengthening parliamentary relations and the potential for tourism development.
