RIGA - Deputy Speaker of the Saeima Antonina Nenaseva recently took part in the 15th Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament, held in Geneva, Switzerland, where she delivered a speech on digital security issues, LETA was informed by the Saeima's Press Service.
In solidarity with Ukraine and in condemnation of Russia’s ongoing aggression, Nenaseva, together with representatives from North America and Europe, left the plenary hall in response to the participation of the Speaker of the Russian Parliament in a panel discussion and refused to join the group photo with the aggressor state.
"Latvia will not remain silent while Russia continues its aggression and war crimes in Ukraine. Walking out of the plenary was not only a political act but also a moral obligation - our solidarity with Ukraine is unbreakable, and we are not alone," emphasized Nenaseva.
During the speaker debate on gender-responsive artificial intelligence and the prevention of violence against women, the Deputy Speaker of the Saeima called for international cooperation in developing effective regulation: "Artificial intelligence is already riddled with gender bias. As parliamentarians, we have a duty to protect society through legislation and to guide the development of AI in a way that serves humanity - ethically and free from violence," noted Nenaseva.
On the sidelines of the summit, the Deputy Speaker met with the Speaker of the Canadian Senate, Raymonde Gagne, affirming that relations between Latvia and Canada are at an all-time high. The two sides discussed further cooperation between Latvia and Canada in promoting security, countering hybrid threats and disinformation, and strengthening the defense industry.
Gagne highlighted that the presence of 1,700 Canadian troops in Latvia stands as irrefutable proof of Canada’s commitment and support. She also commended Latvia’s global leadership on gender equality, pointing to the high proportion of women in decision-making. Over 30 percent of Saeima MPs are women - exceeding the global average.
The summit, organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in cooperation with the Swiss Parliament, was held at the premises of the International Labor Organization and served as a prelude to the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, taking place in Geneva from July 29 to 31.
