TALLINN – The European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR) has submitted a draft resolution to the European Parliament, proposing the introduction of strict measures to curb the spread of Islamist religious centers.

Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Jaak Madison, a signatory to the resolution, said that while the world's attention has been focused on Ukraine in recent years and now also on Iran, Islamic extremism has not disappeared from Europe.

"In Europe, we are seeing a growing number of mosques and so-called Islamic centers, funded by other Muslim countries with the aim of spreading the faith and recruiting jihadist fighters. The result is the emergence of parallel societies, radicalization, and terrorism. All of this poses a significant threat to European security and Christian civilization," Madison said.

The ECR resolution calls on member states to impose a moratorium on the construction of new mosques and Islamic centers.

The resolution also proposes that the European Commission develop EU-wide guidelines for the supervision of high-risk religious institutions. These guidelines would include an obligation to disclose the funders of mosques.

"Europe cannot wait for the threats to our security to materialize. The mechanisms of radicalization are diverse and require a pan-European, coordinated response," said Jaak Madison.
