RIGA - It appears that Ukraine is being surrendered, Artis Pabriks, head of the Northern Europe Policy Centre, said today at the opening of the conference "Ensuring the city's functioning in wartime" in Jurmala, stressing that Latvia must prepare for war.
Pabriks said that, looking at the current geopolitical situation, all signs suggest that Ukraine is being surrendered. How this might unfold is not clear the moment, but it means that the threat on Latvia's and Europe's eastern borders will continue to grow.
Pabriks added that his intention was not to exaggerate, but he believes that Latvia must be prepared for crises and war.
"The better prepared we are, the less likely we are to see war. The better prepared we are, the more likely we are to survive such challenges alive and well," Pabriks said, noting that this is also the reason for organizing this conference.
He wished that the war would end with a just peace for Ukraine, noting an unjust peace is currently being imposed on Ukraine and this is wrong.
As reported, a conference on "Ensuring the city's functioning in wartime" is being held today in Jurmala with the participation of Ukrainian experts, the Northern Europe Policy Centre informed LETA.
The aim of the conference is to develop guidelines and recommendations for Latvia in strengthening public resilience based on Ukraine's experience.
