TALLINN - Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal said at the Lennart Meri Conference that keeping Ukraine stronger should be included in Europe's defense plans, the daily Postimees writes.

He also emphasized that defense spending must increase. Michal mentioned the example of Estonia, where taxes have been raised to increase defense spending, which is unpopular but inevitable.

"Europe must continue on its path of rearmament," Michal added, recalling, however, that Europe is not one country and all countries are different.

He highlighted the elections currently taking place in Romania, which could change the situation.

"Europe will never operate in total unity," Michal said. "We will likely never see the day when Europe is 100 percent united."

However, he recalled that security and prosperity belong together. In addition, according to the prime minister, Europe is stronger now than before, considering how the leaders of major countries are sitting at the same table with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

According to Michal, there is of course discussion in Europe about the continuation of US support, but it is clear that if it could be replaced, that is, financially, then acquiring military capabilities and weapons is a long process.

The prime minister also emphasized that Europe still wants to see the US as its partner in maintaining a rules-based global order.
