RIGA - A diesel passenger train caught fire on Tuesday evening in Nicgale parish of Augsdaugava municipality, between Livani and Daugavpils, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) informed.
The call was received shortly after 21.00 and the extinguishing work took more than two hours. The engine compartment of the train was on fire over an area of ten square meters.
Around 60 people were evacuated from the train before the VUGD arrived.
The State Police informed LETA that the cause of the fire is currently unknown. The police have opened criminal proceedings and are investigating the circumstances.
In total, 63 calls were received by VUGD last night: 29 - to extinguish fires, 11 of which were old grass fires and two forest fires, 26 - to rescue operations, and eight calls were hoaxes. Last night, firefighters responded to calls involving a dwelling house on fire, tyres and the roof of a building, an outdoor toilet, a garden house and a wooden shed, rubbish, hay bales, electricity cables, a wooden fence and food on a stove.
Yesterday at around 11 am, rescuers received a call to Ligatne in Cesis municipality, where a man had lost his way in the forest. The man was found and brought to safety in less than an hour using the emergency vehicles' sound signal.
